Repairs to hairline cracks in the wings of Airbus A380s cost EADS EUR28 million (US$37m) in the first half of the year.
According to the European aerospace company’s first-half financial results, the company’s results included a EUR136 million in one-off charges at Airbus, including “EUR28m in charges related to the A380 wing rib feet repair based on H1 deliveries”.
The company has been gradually rolling out a fix for the wing cracks over the past few months, with A380s being retro-fitted with the solution. The outlay comes on top of an estimated EUR260m spent on developing the solution in 2012.
This didn’t prevent EADS from posting a strong rise in first-half profits, however. The Franco-German company generated net profits of EUR759m for the first six months of the year, 31% higher than the same period in 2012. Revenues increased 6% to EUR26.3 billion.
Meanwhile, EADS has announced plans to restructure its business under the Airbus brand. The new ‘Airbus Group’ will consist of Airbus, the commercial aircraft-maker, alongside Airbus Defence & Space and Airbus Helicopters.
