Abu Dhabi to get permanent cruise terminal

Concept designs are being drawn up for a permanent cruise terminal in Abu Dhabi, it has been announced.
Speaking at the Seatrade Middle East Cruise Forum earlier this week, His Excellency Mubarak Al Muhairi, director general of the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) said a decision on the design is expected to be finalised next year now that a site has been chosen.
Muhairi asked for cruise lines to help the country build the terminal to cater for ships including warehousing and cold storage and aims to increase the number of ships that homeport at the emirate.
“We have made no secret of the fact that we intend to press ahead with the building of a permanent terminal. The current temporary terminal site has now been earmarked as the site of the permanent one,” he explained. “It’s essential to have your thoughts early in the planning process. We’re ready and eager to listen.”
In the meantime its current temporary terminal will continue to welcome three or four ships at a time and has recently had its passenger services updated.
As well as the main Abu Dhabi port the emirate is also looking to develop a stopover cruise destination on Delma Island. The island stop will be ready to include in 2015 or 2016 itineraries.
