Aer Lingus has reported its strongest year since the financial crisis, with its third quarter operating profit up 19%.
The Irish carrier’s Q3 operating profit came in at EUR112.9 million from EUR94.9 million 2013, attributed to a strong short-haul performance and the success of its transatlantic routes.
Revenue on short-haul services was up 5.5% while long-haul increased 34%.
Its passenger numbers are up 4.8% for the three-month period, resulting in more than three million passengers. Figures on long-haul routes were up 23.8% while short-haul is up 2.2%
“Aer Lingus’ short haul traded strongly in a tough environment, with revenue growth increasing by 5.5% in the quarter. This is a reflection of the inherent strength of our business model and the success of management actions taken to address the effects of industrial disruption in Q2 2014,” said Aer Lingus’ CEO Christoph Mueller.
A new route from Dublin to Washington is now lined up to start on 1 May 2015. The service will run four times a week and is the carrier’s ninth destinations in the US.
Its Dublin to San Francisco service will also move from five times a week to daily, while a third daily service to New York will operate from June to August. Flights to Orlando will also be offered four times a week.
