Travel agents have been encouraged to back a new anti-poaching campaign by Acacia Africa.
Coinciding with World Rhino Day on Monday (22 September), the campaign will span a three-month period to build awareness of the plight of rhinos.
The tour operator is working with Zambia’s Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park as an example of change as it now has a 24-hour armed guard for rhinos and has seen no rhino poaching since 2007.
However in countries like South Africa up to three rhino a day are poached and the species is facing extinction in the wild by 2026.
The tour operator is also a corporate partner of Save the Rhino International.
Arno Delport sales & marketing manager said: “A member of the Big Five, most clients have rhinos on their checklist and it’s sad to see their numbers declining year on year. Our campaign aims to get the right balance between the negative statistics and positive news so clients can see where effective change is being made.
“Obviously many agents will have been to Africa and have first-hand knowledge of successful anti-poaching efforts that deserve to be highlighted. We see this campaign as a collaborative effort between ourselves and agents, with the trade sharing their own stories and experiences online.”
The #SaveInongwe hashtag is being used across social media platforms, named after a rhino in the Zambia park that is the face of the campaign.
