Air India will more capacity to its domestic network in the coming weeks and months, with the deployment of new and larger aircraft.
The national carrier has revealed plans to introduce one twin-aisle Boeing 747-400, one B777-200LR and one B777-300ER into its domestic network this month, to help it cope with an increase in traffic over the festive season.
It will also take delivery of an additional B787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, which will initially be deployed on services within India.
And the airline’s fleet expansion will continue in early 2015, with plan to introduce five new Airbus A320 aircraft into its fleet from February 2015.
Air India has also issued a tender for the lease of 14 more A320s in 2015 onwards, all of which will be operated domestically.
The expansion comes as Air India experienced a rise in domestic demand in December 2014. The carrier accommodated 35,100 daily passengers in the first part of the month, up 15% compared to the same period last year. This included high load factors of up to 92% on some routes, including services to Kolkata and Bengaluru.
Air India now operates 267 daily domestic flights.
