Air India will retain its orders for three long-haul Boeing 777 aircraft, it has told the Economic Times.

The airline had been considering switching the order for the smaller B737, but an official with the airline has now confirmed that this will not happen.

“We have decided to drop the idea of changing the order of the remaining three B777s. We will use them for newer routes,” said an unnamed ‘senior Air India official’ was quoted saying by the Economic Times.

One of these new routes will be the recently announced service between Delhi and San Francisco, which will launch on 2 December 2015.

Air India ordered 50 Boeing wide-body aircraft in 2006, including 23 B777s and 27 B787 Dreamliners. So far it has taken delivery of three B777s and 21 B787s, while a further five B777s have been sold to Etihad.
