Air India Express, the low-cost subsidiary of India’s national carrier, is planning to expand its fleet with the addition of multiple new aircraft over the coming years.
The Economic Times reports that the airline will lease the new aircraft, boosting its total fleet size to 25 in the 2016-17 financial year. It then plans to expand further, reaching a fleet of 36 aircraft by the end of the decade.
“We have already signed three leases and five leases are in the process. We are taking brand new planes from leasing companies,” Air India Express’ CEO, K Shyam Sundar was quoted saying by the newspaper.
“We are looking at a fleet of 36 aircraft in the next five years, adding 11 more planes which have been approved by the government,” he added.
The move comes as Air India Express looks to expand its network in the Gulf region, with new routes to Muscat under consideration. Sundar said he is considering serving the Omani capital from Lucknow and Amritsar.
Air India Express operates a fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft.
