Air India suspends flights to new Durgapur Airport

Air India has ceased operating flights to the new Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport in Durgapur, West Bengal.
The Times of India reported the national carrier as saying that it is suspending its Kolkata-Durgapur-Delhi route from today (17 June 2016) due to “operational reasons”.
The withdrawal of Air India leaves the airport without any scheduled operations, and it looks increasingly likely that this major hub, which can accommodate up to a million passengers per year, could become a white elephant.
Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited (BAPL), which developed the greenfield airport, insisted that the Durgapur-Asansol region was a “lucrative market” market, and said it is in “advanced discussions” with other airline for the launch of flights to the airport.
