Air India will introduce 15 more single-aisle Airbus A320 aircraft into its fleet next year, to cater for rising passenger demand.
The Press Trust of India (PTI) reported an anonymous airline source as saying that the national carrier will start taking delivery of the new aircraft in the second quarter of the next financial year, or summer 2016.
“[India’s] domestic market is growing exponentially but somehow Air India has not been able to keep pace with this growth. On the contrary, our market share has only shrunk during this period,” the unnamed source was quoted saying.
“Therefore, we have decided to induct more planes on the domestic routes not only to stem slide in the market share but also increase it as well.”
Air India had already planned to take delivery of 14 new A320neo aircraft, the new fuel-efficient version of the A320, with deliveries expected to commence in 2017.
Air India currently configures its A320 aircraft with 168 seats in a single-class layout or 146 seats in a two-class configuration.
