Air India will introduce 20 more Airbus A320 aircraft into its fleet next year, to cater for a recent surge in domestic traffic.
The Hindu reports that the national carrier will take delivery of the new single-aisle jets between April and December 2017.
The aircraft will leased for a period of up to 12 years and will include some brand new jets. These will come in addition to the 14 new fuel-efficient A320neos that Air India expects the welcome between April 2017 and March 2019.
“We want to capitalise on the domestic market which has witnessed a double-digit growth throughout this year. The yields in the domestic market are much higher for us,” a senior Air India official was quoted saying by The Hindu.
Air India currently operates a fleet of almost 70 A320-series aircraft, including smaller A139s, standards A320s and larger A321s. The three models seat between 122 and 184 passengers, and the new A320neos are expected to seat 168 passengers.
According to data from IATA, domestic air traffic in India surged 19% in the first 10 months of 2015.
