Seven years after the merger between Air India and Indian Airlines was announced, the new entity has decided to celebrate ‘Air India Day’ on 27 August from this year, as reported by Economic Times. The merger was announced in August 2007, and these celebrations are recognition of the merged entity.
Air India and Indian Airlines used to celebrate annual days when they were separate entities, but discontinued the practice, post the merger. While unions used to celebrate it separately in the erstwhile Indian Airlines, Air India celebrated its annual day on 13 October — the day JRD Tata flew the first commercial flight of Tata Aviation from Karachi to Bombay way back in 1932.
