Air India has signed a leasing agreement for 14 new Airbus A320neo aircraft.

The deal with Kuwait-based ALAFCO was signed at the India Aviation event in Hyderabad this week. The aircraft will be leased for a period of 12 years, with the first six scheduled for delivery in 2017, the second six to arrive in 2018, and the final two aircraft to be delivered in 2019.

The A320neo is the new fuel-efficient version of Airbus’ popular single-aisle A320 series, which offers a 15% reduction in fuel burn compared with its predecessor. IndiGo recently took delivery of India’s – and Asia’s – first A320neo.

Air India currently operates a fleet of 66 A320-series aircraft including 22 A319s, 24 A320s and 20 A321s. The national carrier was the first airline in India to operate A320, 27 years ago.
