Air Mandalay to spread wings with Boeing

Air Mandalay has signed a new agreement with Boeing, aimed at driving the carrier’s fleet and network expansion.
The two companies penned a ‘memorandum of collaboration’ recently, which will see Boeing “assist Air Mandalay with its efforts to procure… 737 airplanes through leasing channels”.
“This memorandum is an important step in our growth strategy,” said Adam Htoon, principal of Air Mandalay. “Due to the growth of tourism and business investment in Myanmar, air transportation has become an increasingly important contributor to both the nation’s economic growth and its infrastructure development.
“The country is looking to position itself as a major tourism destination capable of handling an increasing number of foreign visitors. The 737s will provide us with capabilities to support this critical national growth strategy.”
Skip Boyce, Boeing’s president for Southeast Asia, added that the provision of new B737 aircraft would allow Air Mandalay “to prosper and grow in the region”.
Air Mandalay’s fleet currently comprises just three ATR turboprop aircraft, and it has also committed to the purchase of up to 10 new Mitsubishi MRJ-90 regional jets.
But the lease of Boeing 737 aircraft would allow the airline to expand its reach and capacity, serving more destinations across Southeast Asia.
