Air New Zealand’s inaugural flight to Argentina touched down in Buenos Aires this morning.
The new service, NZ30, departed Auckland at 1920 on Tuesday evening and arrived in the Argentine capital at around 0700 this morning New Zealand time, after a 12-hour flight across the Pacific.
Passengers onboard the inaugural flight included All Blacks legend and Air New Zealand ambassador Richie McCaw, and New Zealand’s Associate Minister of Tourism, Paula Bennett.
The flight marks Air New Zealand’s first scheduled service to South America. The route will be operated using a Boeing 777-200 aircraft which features the airline’s latest cabin products, including flat-bed seats in business class, premium economy seats, and the SkyCouch concept in economy class.
The airline’s CEO, Christopher Luxon, said the new route would “stimulate two way tourism and trade” between New Zealand and Argentina.
“Sales for the first few months have exceeded our expectations with a healthy spread of bookings originating in New Zealand, Australia and Argentina. A significant portion of the forward bookings heading to South America are from Australia, and this has been pleasing as it was a key part of the business case for this route,” Luxon commented.
Aerolíneas Argentinas will codeshare on the Buenos Aires–Auckland route and on Air New Zealand’s trans-Tasman services to Sydney and Melbourne.
Today’s arrival into Buenos Aires kicks off a busy month for the airline. Next week, Air New Zealand will join Air China to celebrate the inaugural flight of their alliance service between Beijing and Auckland, and in two weeks’ time the carrier will launch its first flights to Houston.
