Air NZ launches flights to Sunshine Coast
Air New Zealand has launched its first direct flight to south Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
The new route launched on Sunday 1 July 2012, following a partnership between the airline, Sunshine Coast Airport, Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd and Auckland Airport. Flights will now operate daily using Air NZ’s Airbus A320 aircraft. Services depart Auckland airport at 1000, arriving into the Sunshine Coast at 1155. The return service leaves Australia at 1255, arriving back into Auckland at 1810.
Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd’ CEO Steve Cooper said the new air link would provide a major boost to the destination.
“The Sunshine Coast is, in one fell swoop, elevated from a regional economy to a serious player on the international stage,” Cooper said. “New Zealand is the number one international tourism market for the Sunshine Coast, accounting for 30% of our international visitors. It is estimated these seasonal flights will add another 50,000 new room nights and a huge cash injection for the region.
“Our region offers a natural advantage as a safe and clean destination with the added bonus of a warmer climate for our Kiwi friends with this seasonal service running over the winter months,” he added.
The new flight is being operated as part of Air NZ’s trans-Tasman alliance with Virgin Australia.
