Air passengers were forced to pay an additional GBP20,000 (US$31,500) when their chartered aircraft was grounded in Vienna, Austria, on a flight between India and the UK. The Comtel Air flight from Amritsa in India stopped off to refuel in the Austrian capital when it told passengers it had run out of money and could not fund the final leg of its trip to Birmingham, UK. Fliers, who had already paid the GBP500 fee, were escorted to cash machines by police after a stand off with airline staff. According to The Telegraph, passengers were told that they and their luggage would be removed from the plane if they did not pay up. Similar incidents were reported on three other flights, with 600 paying customers affected in total.
