AirAsia has celebrated the 10 anniversary of flying to Shenzhen’s Bao’an International Airport.

The low-cost carrier first started operating to the Pearl River Delta city in July 2007, with the launch of direct services from Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur to Shenzhen. The same year it launched flights to Shenzhen from Kota Kinabalu.

It now operates 35 weekly flights between Southeast Asia and Shenzhen and has flown a total of 4.3 million passengers to and from the city.

“Ten years ago we introduced the concept of low-cost airline in Shenzhen with the aim of enabling more people to fly. Now the people in the Guangdong province are well-connected to the world through our extensive flight network,” said Aireen Omar, CEO of AirAsia.

“We would like to thank the regulators, airport authorities and all our business partners in Shenzhen for their continuous support for the past decade. We look forward to growing the destination further, and celebrate many more milestones together.”

The airline’s Shenzhen network will continue to expand next month with the launch of direct flights to and from the Malaysian island of Langkawi on 1 August.
