The Malaysian resort island of Langkawi will be connected directly to the Chinese metropolis of Guangzhou next year.

Commencing on 24 January 2016, AirAsia will launch four weekly non-stop flights between Langkawi and Guangzhou, putting the island within reach of an estimated 44 million people living in China’s Pearl River Delta region.

Services will depart Langkawi every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 0130, arriving at Guangzhou’s Baiyun International Airport at 0525. The return service will then leave at 0610 and arrive back in Langkawi at 1005.

AirAsia will operate the route using a 180-seat, all-economy class Airbus A320 aircraft, offering up to 720 weekly inbound seats for the island.

The new route becomes the first direct connection between Langkawi and China.

“Following the announcement of making Langkawi our next international hub back in March this year, we are very happy to finally realise our promise with this new direct route to Guangzhou,” said Aireen Omar, CEO of AirAsia. “We have full confidence that this new direct route will boost traffic growth into Langkawi International Airport which currently only serves one international route to Singapore.

“We are working closely with local authorities such as Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) as well as other partners in Langkawi to raise the bar for this beautiful resort island. Langkawi received over three million tourists annually and we look forward to contribute to the growth of the island and subsequently place it on the global map as one of the top international tourist destinations,” she added.

AirAsia currently operates flights from Langkawi to Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Singapore.
