AirAsia is increasing the number of flights it offers to Australia.
The low-cost carrier revealed today (26 August 2013) that its long-haul subsidiary, AirAsia X, will commence twice daily services from Kuala Lumpur to Sydney, Melbourne and Perth later this year.
Following the signing of a new bilateral air service agreement between the Australia and Malaysia, and the expansion of AirAsia X’s fleet, the airline will add a total of nine more weekly flights to the three Australian cities before the end of 2013.
From 1 October 2013, two extra flights will be added to both Sydney and Melbourne, taking the total frequency of both routes to double daily. Then from 25 November 2013, five more weekly flights will be added to the KL-Perth route, taking it from nine flights per week to twice a day.
“We are delighted to increase the current flights to double daily flights on our Australian routes. Our flights from Kuala Lumpur to Sydney, Melbourne and Perth routes have performed extremely well and the new double daily services will help meet increasing demand,” said Azran Osman-Rani, CEO of AirAsia X.
“The double daily services will provide guests with a greater choice of travel times and enable us to offer improved flight connections across our network and that of the AirAsia Group, which would further encourage the growth of tourism and trade of both countries.
“AirAsia X has been lobbying both governments for some time for the increased capacity, and we are delighted to be able to further expand our reach across these dynamic cities from Kuala Lumpur,” he added.
Osman-Rani revealed that AirAsia X has carried more than 3.4 million passengers on its Australian routes since operations began in 2007. Australia contributes over 40% of the airline’s total revenues, and with the new services AirAsia X expects to become the fourth largest international carrier operating in Australia.
AirAsia X flies to Sydney, Melbourne and Perth using its 377-seat, two-class Airbus A330-300 aircraft. The Australian expansion follows the recent announcement that AirAsia X will operate daily flights to Osaka from November 2013.
