AirAsia has announced plans to increase the frequency of its services between Kuala Lumpur and Osaka.
The low-cost carrier currently serves the Japanese city with four weekly flights, operated by its long-haul unit AirAsia X. But from 25 November 2013, the carrier will increase this to daily with the addition of new flights every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
“AirAsia X is responding to the strong and growing travel demand to and from Osaka,” said Azran Osman-Rani, CEO of AirAsia X.
“The airline has recorded on average 81% passenger load in the first half of 2013, proving the strong demand for the route since the commencement of its inaugural flight in November 2011. Overall, the airline has carried over 0.5 million passengers to and from its Japan routes and Japan contributes over 14% of the airline’s total revenue in the first half of 2013,” he added.
In addition to the Osaka flights, AirAsia X also operates services to Tokyo’s Haneda airport, and the airline said the Osaka expansion was “in line with its expansion strategy for the region”. This follows the exit from AirAsia’s Tokyo-based subsidiary, AirAsia Japan.
AirAsia X will operate a 377-seat, two-class Airbus A330-300 to Osaka.
