AirAsia has unveiled plans to completely refit its fleet with a new type of lightweight, slim-line seat.
The low-cost carrier has signed an agreement with Mirus Aircraft Seating which will see it become the launch customer for new ‘Hawk’ economy class seat. All existing and new Airbus A320 and A320neo aircraft will now be equipped with the new seats.
“AirAsia is always keen to work with companies that look for new, inventive ways to enhance customer experience. Through [AirAsia group CEO] Tony [Fernandes]’s association with Formula One, we have been able to work with Mirus, who are experts in composite materials, to develop these innovative seats.” said AirAsia’s group head of engineering, Anaz Ahmad Tajuddin.
“Our guests are at the core of everything we do, and we are happy to achieve our aims of a more ergonomic passenger seat while also ensuring our aircraft are as economical and fuel efficient as possible,” he added.
Made using composite materials and with fewer moving parts, the Hawk seats are almost 40% lighter than conventional aircraft seats. AirAsia said this would allow it to increase cabin space and reduce weight while preserving passenger comfort.
