AirAsia will take delivery of its first Airbus A320neo aircraft in 2016.
The low-cost carrier group has placed orders for 300 A320neos – the new fuel-efficient version of the popular A320 series – and CEO Aireen Omar confirmed that deliveries would run from 2016 to 2026.
“We want to make sure that we don’t use the aircraft that is too old, as it would consume more fuel. We always want to keep an aircraft of a young age,” Ms Omar was quoted saying by the Bernama news agency.
As well as being more efficient, AirAsia’s new A320neos will have a higher capacity than the existing A320s, seating 186 passengers in a single-class layout. They will be rolled out to all AirAsia’s short-haul carriers, in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, India and Japan.
Airbus expects to deliver the first ever A320neo before the end of 2015.
