AirAsia X is expanding its network in China with the introduction of direct flights to Shanghai.

From 19 February 2013, the low-cost carrier will commence six weekly flights from Kuala Lumpur to Shanghai’s Pudong airport. This frequency will rise to daily from 1 May 2013. Flights will be operated using a twin-aisle Airbus A330-300 aircraft with 12 seats in business class and 365 in economy.

The new service was announced today by AirAsia X’s CEO, Azran Osman-Rani, at the Mansion Hotel in Shanghai.

“We foresee strong demand for the route,” Ozman-Rani said. “We are confident that this route will stimulate new travel demand and boost tourism and business potential of both countries.”

Shanghai will be the AirAsia Group’s 14th destination in China, following Hangzhou, Beijing, Chengdu, Guilin, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Nanning, Kunming, Wuhan, Chongqing and Xian, plus Hong Kong and Macau.
