airberlin is now offering passengers the chance to connect to New Zealand for the first time, following the expansion of its codeshare partnership with Virgin Australia.

The two carriers, both of which are part-owned by Etihad, have added 26 new codeshare routes, including five destinations in New Zealand.

airberlin’s flight numbers now feature on 10 Virgin Australia routes connecting Australia with New Zealand, including services from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to Christchurch and Auckland, from Brisbane to Wellington and Dunedin, and from Sydney and Brisbane to Queenstown.

These are in addition to domestic flights to such destinations as Adelaide, Ayers Rock, Cairns, Canberra, Darwin, Gold Coast, Hobart, Launceston and Perth.

“New Zealand is a great destination and our extended relationship with Virgin Australia brings this fascinating country even closer, which is testimony to the excellent partnership the two airlines have enjoyed since 2013,” said Stefan Pichler, airberlin’s CEO.

In return, Virgin Australia has started placing its flight numbers on airberlin’s services from Berlin to Cologne, Stockholm and Helsinki, and from Dusseldorf to Hamburg.
