airberlin has criticised Berlin Brandenburg airport for its decision to delay its opening.
The airline, which was due to introduce new streamlined connections at the new airport, has expressed ‘great disappointment’ after its own meeting with the airport last week appeared confident it would open on 3 June. Its opening has now been pushed back to after summer amid fire safety concerns. airberlin has argued its plans for the airport cannot be replicated at Tegel, although it understood passenger safety is the ‘utmost priority’.
“We have to work around the change of plan, which presents us with a huge challenge. It presents immense logistical problems for all involved and will also cause additional costs which have yet to be calculated,” said Hartmut Mehdorn, CEO of airberlin.
Berlin’s new Brandenburg Airport announced yesterday it will open after summer, with flights to be diverted to Schönefeld and Tegel airports in the meantime.
