Airbus has cancelled Skymark Airlines’ order for six A380s.

Skymark became the first Japanese airline to order the A380 in 2011, but it has now said it will not be able to fulfil its contractual obligations.

“In light of the airline’s expressed intentions in respect of the A380, Airbus has in accordance with its contractual rights, notified Skymark Airlines that the purchase order for the six A380s signed in 2011 has been terminated,” Airbus said in a statement.

The cancellation marks another setback for the European planemaker, which saw Emirates cancel an order for up to 70 A350 aircraft last month. Airbus had already completed the main assembly of Skymark’s first A380, and had conducted test flights.

Tokyo-based Skymark had planned to use the A380s to launch its first intercontinental flights to destinations including New York and London.
