Airbus is planning to ramp up the production and delivery of its commercial aircraft in 2016, to meet rising demand from the world’s airlines.
In the company’s annual start-of-year press conference in Paris, president & CEO Fabrice Bregier announced a target of delivering more than 650 aircraft to customers in 2016, which would mark a new company record.
These deliveries will include the world’s first A320neo aircraft, as Airbus gradually boosts production of its single-aisle series to 50 aircraft per month. The new twin-aisle A350 series will also be accelerated, with Airbus planning to deliver 50 A350-900s in 2016, up from just 14 last year.
Approximately 27 A380 deliveries are planned for 2016, similar to 2015.
Airbus will also continue to develop its new long-haul aircraft this year, with the first A350-1000 – the largest version of the A350 series – expected to enter final assembly next month, enabling its first flight before year-end. The first new A330neo is also expected enter final assembly in the fourth quarter of 2016.
Airbus needs to ramp up production to clear a huge backlog of orders. The company sold another 1,036 commercial aircraft in 2015, taking its total backlog to a record 6,787 aircraft, valued at almost US$1 trillion.
