The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has agreed new regulations for the amount of noise emitted by commercial aircraft.

The ICAO Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP), which comprises representatives from aviation companies, environmental groups and governments, reached a consensus to implement tighter rules on the maximum noise emissions of new aircraft. The standards will apply to new aircraft types being certified from 31 December 2017 onwards, and will see a reduction of seven Effective Perceived Noise Decibels (EPNdB) compared to the current standard.

“Air transport is already 75% quieter than it was four decades ago and the industry will continuously pursue cost-effective noise management options to reduce the number of people subject to aircraft noise, in line with our broader global commitments on sustainability and environmental performance,” said Tony Tyler IATA’s Director General & CEO.

The recommendations agreed by CAEP will be reported to the ICAO Council later in 2013 for further action.
