Two relatively new airlines have signed an agreement intended to boost air traffic between Vietnam and India.
Ho Chi Minh City-based low-cost carrier VietJet Air, which commenced operations in 2011, this week signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with India’s Air Costa, which launched in 2013.
The deal forms part of a new strategic alliance that the airlines say will allow them “to explore opportunities in aviation and travel between Vietnam and India”.
The signing ceremony took place on 27 October 2014 and was attended by several high-level officials including Nahendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, and his Vietnamese counterpart, Nguyen Tan Dung.
VietJet will initially start serving India from Bangkok, using its soon-to-be-launched subsidiary, Thai VietJet Air. The exact routes and frequencies of the Indian flights are yet to be announced.
Earlier this year Vietnam Airlines and Jet Airways also agreed to join forces, offering codeshare flights between India and Vietnam. Although like VietJet and Air Costa, they appear to be dipping their toes in the water to test demand, by operating flights via Bangkok.
Currently there are no direct flights between India and Vietnam.
