Airlines from across the world have agreed to look at a global solution to tackling carbon emissions after the European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) was met with backlash.

Carriers have approached governments to adopt a new system post-2020 after talks between the EU and other countries with the United Nations over ETS collapsed, according to Reuters.

The EU had previously said airlines from outside Europe would temporarily not have to pay the fees after criticisms mainly from China and India, with pressure put on the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to deliver a global solution.

IATA welcomed a market-based measuring system (MBM) to the issue that would apply to all airlines. Its 240 members have agreed that a single approach would work best.

“Airlines are committed to working with governments to build a solid platform for the future sustainable development of aviation. Today, they have come together to recommend to governments the adoption of a single MBM for aviation and provide suggestions on how it might be applied to individual carriers. Now the ball is in the court of governments,” said IATA’s director general and CEO Tony Tyler.
