Airports brace for bank holiday escape

Around 1.8 million British holidaymakers are due to head overseas this August bank holiday weekend, while domestic tourism will also see a boost.
According to ABTA, Spain, Turkey and Greece remain the most popular destinations with travellers, while Egypt and Tunisia have also seen a boost. In the UK, tour operators are said to have reported good demand with Blackpool, Brighton and the Channel Islands expected to be busy.
Based on last year’s figures, 1.3m people are expected to fly from London, while 100,000 will fly from Scottish airports; 150,000 from Manchester; 62, 500 from Birmingham; 10,000 from Cardiff and 25,500 from Leeds Bradford.
Eurostar has also reported 60,000 people will head to France, Holland and Belgium during the weekend, with ferries and the channel tunnel expected to be “extremely busy”.
Meanwhile, National Express has added hundreds of extra seats to cater for demand to cities including Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels.
