ANA becomes first airline to operate 50 Dreamliners

Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) has become the first airline in the world to operate a fleet of 50 Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
The airline’s 50th Dreamliner was handed over to the carrier on Wednesday (17 August 2016) in a ceremony at Boeing’s factory in the US. ANA was the launch customer for the Dreamliner and also is also the aircraft’s biggest customer, with orders for a total of 83 jets.
“The 787 Dreamliner has played a significant role in opening up new routes into new markets, while also forming the backbone of our long-haul fleet,” said Osamu Shinobe, president & CEO of ANA.
ANA also announced plans to launch new Dreamliner routes in the coming months, with flights from Tokyo to Phnom Penh commencing next month and services to Mexico City due to start in February 2017.
The airline, which is Japan’s largest in terms of fleet size and passenger traffic, initially ordered 50 B787s in 2004, with the first entering service in 2011. The airline now operates more than 11% of all Dreamliners in the world, and has used the aircraft on an estimated 125,000 flights.
As well as its existing fleet of 50 smaller B787-8s and mid-sized B787-9s, ANA also has outstanding orders for the largest version of the Dreamliner series, the B787-10.
The B787 Dreamliner was the first commercial passenger aircraft in the world to be made using composite materials, making it significantly lighter, quieter and more fuel-efficient than older jets. Other airlines to have placed large orders for the aircraft include Etihad Airways (71 aircraft), United Airlines (49), Japan Airlines (46), British Airways (42) and American Airlines (42).
