The first night flights have landed in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, following upgrades to Port Blair’s Veer Savarkar Airport.

SpiceJet operated the first night flight to the island chain on 11 September, when its Boeing 737 service from Kolkata touched down in Port Blair after sunset at 1810, where it was greeted by a water cannon salute. The return flight then departed at 1845.

The flights were made possible by the recent upgrade of the runway, lighting and navigation systems at Veer Savarkar Airport.

“This is another landmark achievement to realise the vision of… Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to increase connectivity to the remotest parts of India,” said Lt Gen AK Singh, Governor of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

“I congratulate SpiceJet for being the pioneering airline to undertake the night landing at Port Blair and look forward to SpiceJet and other airlines now adding regular night landing flights to Port Blair providing more domestic connections, and introducing international connections as well,” he added.

Sanjiv Kapoor, chief operating officer of SpiceJet, said his airline would now explore the possibility of adding “more flight options” to Port Blair. The low-cost carrier already operates daily direct flights to Port Blair to Kolkata and Chennai.
