The temples of Angkor are among the most highly-rated landmarks in the world.
TripAdvisor revealed this week that two of Cambodia’s famed attractions, Angkor Wat and the nearby Bayon Temples, both ranked in the top five landmarks in the world, according to the ratings and reviews posted on its site in 2012.
While Michu Picchu in Peru was the top-ranked global landmark, Angkor Wat was second and the Bayon Temple, which features carved stone faces of Buddha, was fifth. Two other Asian landmarks – India’s Taj Mahal and Jordan’s Petra – were third and fourth.
Based on the millions of reviews and opinions from travellers, TripAdvisor managed to develop a list of more than 1,250 of the world’s most highly-rated landmarks, parks, museums and theme parks.
But despite its abundance of heritage sites in Asia, the region didn’t fare so well in terms of parks. Only one Asian park – Singapore’s Botanic Gardens – ranked in the global top 10. Stanley Park in Vancouver was top, followed by New York’s Central Park and the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs.
