Updated 10.51 09Aug12: A campaign to get the public emailing MPs about Air Passenger Duty (APD) has reached the 90,000 mark.
The ‘A Fair Tax on Flying’ campaign said the milestone was reached last week and is now ‘very close’ to reaching 100,000 emails. The campaign has been boosted by airlines, aviation groups and business organisations lending their support, with another six joining the fight in recent weeks. These include the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, Definitive Caribbean, Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, Multicom, Newmont Travel and Wales Air Forum.
“While the Caribbean has come off badly in the APD structure the tax is now having a dramatic impact on the UK’s economy. If the Government wants to use travel to bring in more taxation, they need to encourage more travel rather than stifle it. We are delighted to join a cohesive force to bring fairness and justice to this issue,” said Lindsay Ingram, general manager of Newmont Travel on its involvement.
Now six weeks into the campaign, AFTOF revealed 75 MPs have backed a parliamentary motion (EDM 174) into assessing levels of APD, including members from across political parties.
