Young travellers would be attracted to cruises if they knew more about the dining options and time in port, according to a new survey.

Research taken by Travelzoo during National Cruise Week found 56% of those aged 44 or under are considering a cruise, with two thirds happy to pay a supplement for speciality restaurants.

However 95% said they would also want to try out food while in a port and would value time in the destination.

Those in the younger bracket would look to have a five to 10-night cruise instead of the longer options.

Raphael Giacardi, Travelzoo’s cruise deal expert said: “It’s important that cruise companies explain what their cruises have to offer very clearly – highlighting longer time in port and dining options on board when seeking to appeal to the younger end of the market.

“Whilst the younger crowd may initially seem more relaxed with their spending, on closer inspection it becomes clear that it’s still the over-65s who are spending more on the overall cost of their cruise – opting for longer, higher-priced cruise itineraries and then being more frugal once at sea.

“The thing to bear in mind is that the experience each end of the market is looking for is quite different – not all cruise virgins are created equal.”

Three quarters of those aged over 65 would consider going to a speciality restaurant, and more than a half would spend GBP1,100-3,000 compared to 17% of 25-34 year olds.
