Asia’s emerging airlines continued to invest in new aircraft on the third day of the Farnborough Air Show.
On Wednesday, China’s Hainan Airlines has agreed to purchase 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft in a deal worth more than US$5.1 billion at list prices.
The deal marks Hainan Airlines’ first commitment for the new fuel-efficient version of the B737, and the new aircraft will allow the carrier to renew and expand its existing fleet of approximately 100 single-aisle jets. The order still needs to be ratified by the Chinese government.
“The 737 is the backbone of our single-aisle fleet,” said Adam Tan, vice chairman & president of Hainan Airlines. “The new 737 MAX will help our airline grow, become more efficient and offer five-star service for our passengers.”
Meanwhile, Myanmar’s national carrier has placed an order with turboprop manufacturer ATR. Myanma Airways, which will be named Myanmar National Airlines in the near future, signed a deal for six ATR 72-600s, with options for a further six. The new aircraft are scheduled for delivery between 2015 and 2017.
This was the second deal for a Myanmar-based airline at Farnborough this week, after Air Mandalay signed a purchase agreement with Mitsubishi for six MRJ90 aircraft, with options for a further four.
