Asian travellers spend more on their festive family vacations than those in other parts of the world, a new survey has found.
According to HomeAway’s holiday survey, almost 33% of Asian families who celebrate Christmas will be spending more than US$1,000 on travel during the festive season, compared to only 22% globally.
And 20% of respondents from Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Japan and South Korea will spend more than US$1,000 on accommodation alone, compared to the global average of just 12%.
“In Asia, we find Christmas and New Year to be one the busiest periods for travel and this year we have seen a peak in travellers looking for vacation rentals particularly within the region,” said Prashant Kirtane, HomeAway’s vice president for Asia. “During the festive period, the biggest travel destinations for Singapore include staycations at home in Singapore, and trips to Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Taipei and Seoul.”
The survey also found that the biggest barrier to travel for Asian families during the festive season is the cost of accommodation (27%), followed by the hassle of travel planning (20%). Only 5% of Asian families however, are held back from travelling due to tradition, which was found to be the second biggest barrier globally, at 17%.
