Asian travellers are the most likely to use their mobile devices to brag about being on holiday, a new study has found.

A recent poll by TripAdvisor found that 88% of Asian travellers remain connected to their smartphones while on holiday – slightly more than the global average. And while the most popular reason for using smartphones is to stay connected with family and friends, a significant number of respondents admitted they use social media to brag about being on holiday.

Globally, just 8% of travellers admitted using social media while on holiday to “make their friends jealous”, but this rose to 37% among Indian travellers and 30% among respondents from Indonesia – the world’s two most prolific holiday bragging nations. Travellers from Italy (8%) and Greece (5%) were found to be the least likely to show off.

“Travellers’ reliance on mobile devices and social media is consistent with the trends we’re seeing at TripAdvisor,” said Marc Charron, president of TripAdvisor for Business.  “One in three TripAdvisor reviews are submitted by Facebook-connected users, demonstrating that travellers are still keen to share their experiences via social media platforms.”

In total, 61% of global travellers said they engage heavily on social media during their holidays, but this increased to 69% among Asian travellers.
