A new Atlantis resort could be developed at the new Shanghai Disneyland project, it has been revealed.

Chinese developer Fosun International has said it plans to build the new ultra-luxury water-based resort near the under-construction Disneyland attraction, in Shanghai’s Pudong district.

“We are talking seriously with Atlantis headquarters on the project,” the Shanghai Daily quoted Fosun’s vice chairman & chief executive, Liang Xinjun, as saying. “They are really interested in building it near Disneyland,” he added.

The Atlantis brand is operated by Kerzner International, which also controls the luxury One&Only resort label. Following existing Atlantis resorts in Dubai and the Bahamas, Kerzner recently announced plans to bring the brand to China, with the launch of a 1,300-room resort in Sanya.

This development, which is expected to launch in 2016,  is also being developed by Fosun. When announcing the Sanya project in October, Fosun said it intended to “appropriate more resources into developments in the tourism industry”.

Shanghai Disneyland is expected to open in December 2015, and will cover an area of almost 4km².
