All air passengers boarding outbound flights from Australia will now have their details checked by an automated system.
The country’s Department of Immigration & Border Protection has implemented SITA’s iBorders system to manage its ‘Outward Advance Passenger Processing’ (APP) programme. Airlines will now be required to provide the Australian government with data for all departing travellers in advance of their flight.
Passenger information will be sent automatically to the Department of Immigration & Border Protection during check-in, and airlines will receive a real-time response advising whether or not the passenger is permitted to board the flight.
The aim is to identify passengers who may be a security concern ahead of departure.
John Gibbon, assistant secretary of the Department of Immigration & Border Protection’s traveller branch, commented; “Outward APP delivers a faster and more seamless experience for travellers, while meeting our business needs to manage threats and ensure the integrity of Australia’s border.”
Following a trial period, the SITA system is now in pace for 47 airlines, processing approximately two million passengers per month.
“Australia has long been recognised as a leader and innovator in the area of border management,” said Ilya Gutlin, SITA’s president for Asia Pacific. “Working in sync with the airlines, Australia now runs advance, automatic checks on every passenger arriving or departing the country, making the journey smoother for authorized travellers while addressing issues with persons of interest.”
Approximately 30 governments worldwide now use SITA’s iBorders systems.
