Bangkok Airways has placed an order for six new turboprop aircraft at the Singapore Airshow.

The deal will see the Thai carrier purchase six ATR 72-600 aircraft, with options for a further two. The order is valued at almost US$200 million.

“The arrival of these new ATR 72-600 aircraft is the logical continuation of a long-standing partnership,” said Captain Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, president of Bangkok Airways. “The ATRs are an integral part of our airline’s identity and of our top-quality services to the most attractive tourist destinations in the country. We are looking forward to the arrival of our new ATRs, as they will allow us to offer even more comfortable flying conditions to our customers.”

Bangkok Airways has been operating ATR aircraft for two decades and currently has a fleet of eight ATR 72-500s (pictured), along with 17 Airbus A319s and A320s. The first new ATR 72-600s will be delivered later this year, and will come fitted with between 68 and 74 seats.

ATR’s CEO, Filippo Bagnato, said that he was pleased to renew the partnership with Bangkok Airways.

“Airlines like Bangkok Airways have allowed us to consolidate our presence in the region and to demonstrate the multiple advantages of our aircraft for short-haul networks. We are very grateful that Bangkok Airways has renewed its confidence in ATR and we are proud to continue to move forward with them, now with the newest ATR -600s,” said Bagnato.

There are currently more than 270 ATR aircraft flying in the Asia Pacific region, operated by 50 airlines.
