Bangkok Airways is launching flights to Myanmar’s capital, Naypyidaw.
From 30 September 2013, the Thai carrier will commence three weekly flights to the city, direct from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport.
Services will depart the Thai capital every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1700, getting into Naypyidaw at 1900. The return flight leaves the Myanmar capital at 1930 the same day, and gets back into Bangkok at 2230. Flights will be operated using a 70-seat ATR72 aircraft.
The new flights to Naypyidaw add to Bangkok Airways’ existing flights to Yangon and a new service to Mandalay, which also starts next month.
“It has long been our plan to cover the three key cities of Myanmar,” said Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, Bangkok Airways’ president. “We consider this to be a major milestone for us as not only will this make Bangkok Airways the first scheduled foreign airline to fly to Naypyidaw, but it also makes us the only Thai airline that serves all three main cities of Myanmar.
“We anticipate that the majority of our passengers on the direct Bangkok–Naypyidaw flights will be businessmen and government officials. The other two routes will most likely be mainly tourists. We are confident that… Bangkok Airways will become a leading player in this market,” he added.
The new flights will come ahead of Naypyidaw’s hosting of the 2013 Southeast Asian Games, which get underway in the city in December.
