Bangkok will get a new direct air link early next year, when Japan’s Peach starts flying to the Thai capital from Okinawa.
The new service will also mark Peach’s entry into Thailand, and Southeast Asia.
Commencing on 19 February 2017, the new service will operate daily, with evening departures from Okinawa’s Naha Airport and early morning return services from Bangkok’s Subarnabhumi Airport. A low-cost carrier, Peach will serve the route using its 180-seat, all-economy Airbus A320 jets.
“I feel a very strong sense of fate in the fact that we will be able to start servicing this route in 2017, the 130th anniversary of friendly ties between Japan and Thailand,” stated Peach’s representative director & CEO, Shinichi Inoue. “The casualness of our flights, much like… an airborne version of our everyday trains, will finally start to happen in Southeast Asia.
“I hope that by leveraging the characteristics of a route to and from Okinawa, a movement will begin to occur that has never been seen before, such as a new style of travel for women using Peach. I’m already excited that with Peach servicing the route as a “bridge for Asia”, Bangkok will become a place that people can casually visit,” he added.
For Okinawa, this marks another key step in the expansion of its tourism sector, which is heavily reliant on the domestic market. The islands’ tourism authorities previously penned a deal with Changi Airport that led to the launch of charter flights from Singapore, but Peach’s route will become Naha Airport’s first scheduled, year-round, non-stop service to Southeast Asia.
Bangkok becomes the seventh international destination for Peach, following Hong Kong, Shanghai, Seoul, Busan, Taipei and Kaohsiung.
