Biman Bangladesh Airlines has signed a leasing agreement for two short-range aircraft.
The Dhaka-based national carrier has penned a deal with Egypt’s Smart Aviation Company to lease two Bombardier Q400 aircraft. The turboprops will be based at Bangladesh’s main air gateway, Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, and will be used to operate domestic and short-haul regional flights.
This marks the first time Biman has operated a Bombardier aircraft.
“With Bangladesh’s aviation sector experiencing an 8% annual growth rate, the Q400… will provide reliable, comfortable and affordable air connectivity to a number of destinations in Bangladesh,” said Kyle Haywood, Biman’s managing director & CEO.
“This agreement represents another important step in our growth journey and fleet modernisation programme, and we are confident that the Q400 NextGen turboprop will be a key asset in helping Biman offer a high level of service to Bangladesh nationals and visitors alike.”
Including the new Q400s, Biman now operates a fleet of 12 aircraft. It also has plans to expand its long-haul fleet, with outstanding orders for four Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which are due to enter Biman’s fleet from 2019.
