Beatles US tour named most iconic departure

The Beatles heading out on their first tour of America has been named as the most iconic UK departure in the last 100 years.
The band waving from Heathrow Airport as they boarded a Pan Am flight to JFK back in 1964 was voted as the top departure moment by the public which sees its results released today.
The Beatles received 49% of votes in a poll of 1,000 people conducted by Opinion Matters on behalf of Heathrow Airport.
Bob Geldof’s visit to Ethiopia which inspired Live Aid was voted in second position, followed by David Attenborough’s first journey to film ‘Life’ in 1979 and Princess Diana’s visit to Luanda in 1997.
Concorde’s record-breaking crossing from London to New York in two hours, 52 minutes and 59 seconds was listed fifth, while RAF entered in sixth when taking flight for the Battle of Britain in July 1940.
Historian Dominic Sandbrook, who devised the survey with Heathrow said, “Britain has always been a land of explorers and entertainers, inventors and innovators. It’s no surprise to see the great landmarks of the Second World War on the list. But I think the public’s choices also reflect our historic strengths in everything from philanthropy and popular culture to science and technology. It’s a valuable reminder that we’re at our best when we face outwards, as a nation of international ambitions and global horizons.”
