The Union Cabinet of India has approved the renaming of Bengaluru International Airport.
The airport will now be called as Kempegowda International Airport. The Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) is a Greenfield airport in South India which became operational in 2008.
The airport is named after Hiriya Kempegowda, a ruler under the Vijaynagar Empire, who ruled most parts of Karnataka during the 16th century.
