Boeing has unveiled a new type of overhead storage bin designed to increase the amount of space for passengers’ hand luggage.
The new ‘Space Bins’, which are now available as an optional feature on new B737s and B737 MAX aircraft, are able to handle six standard size bags – two more than the current pivot bins installed on latest B737s. This means that the maximum number of bags each aircraft can carry will jump from 132 to 194.
“We’re taking the Boeing Sky Interior, which is hugely popular with our airline customers and passengers, and building on that success by adding even more room for bags,” said Beverly Wyse, vice president and general manager of the 737 programme.
“One of the reasons the 737 is the world’s best selling airplane is because we work with our customers to continuously improve the airplane with features such as Space Bins.”
As well as having a larger capacity, the front edges of the new Space Bins are lower, meaning that passengers will be able to see into the back of the bin more easily.
Alaska Airlines will become the first carrier to adopt the Space Bins, which will be fitted to all of the airline’s new deliveries from late 2015.
Existing B737 operators will also be able to retrofit their current aircraft with the new bins.
