Boeing has launched its new overhead storage bins, which are designed to increase the amount of carry-on barrage an aircraft can store by 48%.
The new Space Bins, which have been introduced on a Boeing 737 belonging to Alaska Airlines, are designed to store six bags each – two more than the current pivot bins installed on the most recent B737s. This is based on a standard-sized carry-on bag measuring 23cm x 36cm x 56cm.
Alaska Airlines is the launch customer of the Space Bins, which will now be offered on new and existing B737s.
“We work closely with our customers to continuously enhance their airplanes so they can offer great passenger experiences,” said Brent Walton, Boeing’s manager of 737 interiors new features. “We have a strong record of delivering value with innovative interior features like bigger bins that help reduce passenger anxiety about overhead storage and provide a better travel experience.”
When open, the bottom edge of a Space Bin hangs down about 5cm lower than current bins, so that passengers can lift their bags into the overhead space more easily. The design also allows passengers to look into the back of the bin, and Boeing also claims the new containers are easier to close.
Alaska Airlines will install Space Bins on a total of 69 B737-series aircraft by 2017.
