Boeing has produced and delivered its 1,500th 747 aircraft.
The landmark wide-body jet was a brand new B747-8 Intercontinental, which was painted in the colours of Lufthansa before being delivered to the German carrier’s home base in Frankfurt. It becomes the 14th B747-8 operated by Lufthansa and features a special logo commemorating the fact that it is the 1,500th B747 ever produced.
“Reaching this milestone delivery is a testament to the capabilities of the airplane and our commitment to continuous innovation,” said Eric Lindblad, 747 vice president & general manager. “The new 747-8 is delivering on its promise to our customers, and we continue to look at ways to make it even more efficient in the future.
“The 747 is the first wide-body airplane in history to reach the 1,500 milestone. Its iconic shape makes it instantly recognizable, and passengers have consistently voted it their favourite airplane to fly,” he added.
The B747 made its debut back in 1970 with Pan Am, and became an icon in the aviation industry. The four-engined plane became the first commercial aircraft to have an upper deck, which BA initially used as a first class lounge area before modifying it to handle extra seats.
Several versions of the aircraft were launched, including the popular B747-400 which started flying in 1989 and is still operated by many airlines today.
The new B747-8, which debuted in 2011, has been less popular however. Lufthansa is one of only five airlines to have purchased the passenger version of the jet, along with Korean Air, Air China, Aeroflot and Arik Air.
